Dirty Old Town is based on the famous Ewan McColl song of the same name

The painting refers to lines from the song, but also appearing are the famous blue Salford cranes (now demolished), a kingfisher that was recently seen on the ship canal (...times seem to have have changed!) and the work of L.S. Lowry, whose work is synonymous with Salford.

Legend has it that Salford Council asked Ewan McColl to remove the word ‘Salford’ from the lyrics, but it has been reported that Peggy Seeger, Ewan’s partner, denied this – which seems more likely.
