"Woman with Hurdy Gurdy"

Oil on canvas

70cm x 100cm

"Woman with Hurdy " is the most complex painting I’d done up to the date it was finished. As with 'Pegasus', which was completed around the same time, the compositional structure was reworked many times on paper before the design was finally committed to canvas.

Unlike 'Pegasus', there is little in the way of narrative - the notion of a woman playing a musical instrument was just a starting point for a compositional arrangement that is decorative rather than narrative. There are deliberately no prominent focal points, and the geometry and colour of the image provide visual sensation rather than meaning.

As with "Pegasus 2", this is influenced by Cubism but takes a larger step towards 'Deco'
