As with the other ‘cityscape’ paintings such as “Northern Quarter” and “Chinatown”, the apparently naïve style of this picture contrasts with the technicalities that were used to give the illusion of depth. Up to fifteen methods can be used to achieve this effect – some blatantly obvious such as closer objects overlapping more distant buildings, some less obvious.
The intent is not to create a sense of depth in a realistic sense, but in a sense that the painting has its own sense of reality - a bit like a toy theatre.
